Abstract : This invention relates to gas-filled proportional counters and more particularly to a construction which eliminates end effects. This invention overcomes the disadvantages of the prior art by inserting a resistor-conductor network at the ends of the counter structure, thereby defining the mathematical boundary conditions there. In particular, the resistor-conductor network can be designed in such a way that the potential at the ends duplicates the potential on an infinitely long counter of similar cross section. By so defining the potential at the ends, the potential everywhere inside the counter becomes that of an infinitely long counter, i.e., eliminating end effects.
