Abstract : An apparatus for estimating the mean-level of a stochastic process such as would be observed at the output of a radar, communications or sonar receiver and for using the mean-level to provide a threshold with which possible signal samples are compared to determine the presence or absence of the signal. The estimated mean-level is used in lieu of a priori information when it is unreasonable to assume that the characteristics of the stochastic process are known. Samples of the stochastic process along with possible signal samples are furnished to a storing and shifting device. A comparison is performed between the possible signal sample and the weighted sum and when the possible signal is greater, an output is provided to indicate the presence of a target. In an alternative embodiment, the sum value is used to normalize the possible signal sample and, with further processing, thereby provides an indication of the presence or absence of a target.
