Abstract : According to this invention, an inhibitor for a multiple base, nitrocellulose containing propellant is affixed to the propellant grain by applying a trialkoxysilane containing a pendant amino group. Upon application the silane reacts with water that is absorbed on the nitrocellulose to form a triol which, in turn, loses water and forms a polymeric siloxane. In theory some of the hydroxyl groups of the nitrocellulose react with the siloxane polymer as it is formed and thus establish bonds between the propellant grain and the inhibitor. The pendant amino groups appears to catalyze the hydrolysis reaction. (Author)
