Abstract : An electronically controlled surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) phase shifter in which an applied voltage produces an electric field parallel with or transverse to the direction of propagation of the SAW. The electric field is applied relative to a piezoelectric substrate between transmitting and receiving transducers fixed on the piezoelectric substrate. Electrical energy is coupled to the transmitting transducer, which converts the electrical energy to an acoustical wave. The acoustical wave is coupled onto the substrate and directed toward the receiver transducer. The receiver transducer converts the acoustical wave to electrical energy which is then conducted to a detector or any other appropriate electrical device. The electric field applied between the transmitting and receiving transducers produces an electronically controlled phase shift in the surface acoustical wave being transmitted. The electric field may be applied to a N-or-p type semiconductor which concentrates charge carriers along the interface where the acoustic wave electric field exist. (Author)
