Abstract : The weight of a stainless steel transverse platelet injector can be substantially reduced by making the machined injector body from a composite material of an aluminum alloy with a thin (0.080 to 0.100 inch) cladding of stainless steel. The joining of the composite material to a stainless steel platelet faceplate is accomplished by electron beam welding. The aluminum allows the relatively thick low stressed body to be fabricated from an easy-to-machine, low density material resulting in reductions in both machining costs and injector weight.
