Abstract : A predetermined amount of hydrogen peroxide is added to an aqueous waste stream containing organic pollutants, the mixture thoroughly mixed and the resultant mixture irradiated with ultraviolet light. The irradiation by ultraviolet light facilitates the breakdown of the hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals which are capable of oxidizing virtually any refractory organic compound, thereby reducing the chemical oxygen demand of an aqueous waste stream.
