Abstract : A method of electrooptically synthesizing speech uses a charge coupled device (CCD) analog read-only memory (ROM). A mask is fashioned to be provided with rows and columns of areas each having differing light transmissivities. These areas are each representative of sample values taken at a rate to assure the creation of discrete acoustical sounds. The mask is positioned or deposited on an area-array CCD in alignment with the photosensor elements of the CCD. The mask is periodically illuminated, for example, by a flashing light emitting diode (LED) so that charge packets, representative of the sample values of the discrete acoustical sounds, are created in the CCD. The charge packets are addressed by appropriate logic signals from an external synthesis box to read out preselected sequences of the charge packets to reconstruct signals representative of discrete acoustical sounds. Next, the charge packets are converted to representative voltages which are amplified and fed to a loudspeaker which projects acoustic energy representative of speech.
