Abstract : A prevision pointing and tracking control system having a source for producing an electromagnetic beam, a high efficiency diffraction grating, a retroreflector, sensor and means for adjusting the optical relationship between the above elements and a target. The diffraction grating diffracts a large portion of an incident naarrow spectral band or monochromatic beam into a single (non-zero) diffraction order in conjunction with the retroreflector as a means of (1) sampling the input narrow band or monochromatic beam, and (2) collecting any radiated electromagnetic energy coming from the direction of propagation (i.e., from the target or receiver). By maintaining a proper relationship between target and source radiation, precision pointing and tracking of the target by the beam produced from the source can be easily accomplished. (Author)
