Abstract : An output coupling system for a near-millimeter microwave source which generates radiation based upon the Smith-Purcell effect. A flat electron beam is passed over a diffraction grating so as to produce output radiation. The preferred embodiment of the present invention contemplates the provision of an unstable resonator for coupling out the radiation. The unstable resonator takes the form of a cylindrical mirror surface along which the diffraction grating is disposed, and a second mirror surface disposed oppositely with respect to the cylindrical mirror and smaller in size so that the radiation will eventually be coupled out of the system as an annulus. The second mirror may be disposed on the lower surface of a lens for focusing and thereby further controlling the output radiation. (Author)
