Abstract : Apparatus and a method are disclosed for measuring adhesion of particulate materials. A geometric object, such as a steel ball, is immersed in a sample of particulate material which is compacted to a predetermined density. The temperature of the sample is carefully controlled while the steel ball is pulled from the sample. The force required to pull the ball from the sample at a given temperatue is recorded. Numerous tests conducted at different temperatures provide data to define a characteristic curve for a given particulate material. The apparatus and method is particularly useful for measuring the adhesion of aluminum powder such as that used as fuel in rocket motor solid propellant. (Author)
