Abstract : A fiber optical sensor for modulating the intensity of light in an optical fiber in response to mechanical information in the form of linear position, rotation rate or strain. Light from a source is transmitted down the optical fiber, through a birefringent modulatable element positioned between crossed polarizers, and on to a light detector. The birefringence of the modulatable element is susceptible to influence by an external force, such as a mechanical stress or a magnetic field, which is generated by the device being monitored. The external force causes a rotation of the light in the modulatable element and encodes the mechanical information into digital form. (Author)
