Abstract : The present invention relates generally to proximity fuzes for use with guided missiles, and more particularly it pertains to an improved microwave circuit for frequency modulation operation in a proximity fuze. In conventional proximity fuze circuits, an oscillator in the fuzed missile continually emits signals, and upon approaching a target, signal reflection occurs, thus producing a beat frequency between the emitted and reflected signals due to the Doppler frequency shift engendered by the relative motion of fuzed missile and target. In radio proximity fuzes, the intensity of the emitted signal at the target is proportional to the inverse square of the distance from fuzed missile to target, and with the usual relatively small solid angle subtended by the target, the intensity of the reflected signal at the fuzed missile is in turn also proportional to the inverse square, with the result that the intensity of the reflected signal at the fuzed missile is proportional to the product of the two inverse squares, that is, to the inverse fourth power of said distance or range.
