Abstract : A heat measuring device is provided for remotely measuring temperature of the surface of a body and is readily adaptable for measuring skin friction due to fluid flow over a body. A surface of a body is coated with cholesteric liquid crystals which change color with temperature and a spot on the coated surface is heated by a laser beam. Surface temperature is monitored by illuminating the heated spot by light and directing the light reflected from the liquid crystals to a photomultiplier tube. Laser power at the surface is indirectly measured by a beam splitter and a photodetector. (Author)
