Abstract : A fiber optic optoacoustic spectroscopy device for the remote detection of trace quantities of gases. The device includes a fiber optic spectrophone located in the vicinity of the gases to be detected. A modulated excitation laser beam is transmitted to the spectrophone from a remote source via an optical fiber linkage. Similarly a remotely fiber optic interferometer is coupled to a fiber optic pressure detector in the spectrophone via optical fiber linkages. The device allows the spectrophone to be physically and electrically separated from the other parts of the device containing electrical apparatus such that the danger of explosion involved in the detection of explosive gases is reduced.
