Abstract : A method for forming an optical fiber directional coupler comprising the steps of preferentially etching a groove into a flat surface of a first dielectric substrate to a depth such that when an optical fiber is disposed therein, the top of its core rises to approximately the flat surface of the substrate; embedding a first optical fiber in the etched groove; removing that portion of the first optical fiber above the flat surface of the dielectric substrate using the flat surface as a reference plane; repeating the etching, embedding, and removing steps to produce a matching second optical fiber embedded in a groove of a second dielectric substrate; and overlapping and aligning the first and second dielectric substrates so that the first and second optical fibers are aligned lengthwise in parallel adjacency to realize an optical coupling region.
