Abstract : One type of command-to-line-of-sight missile guidance required goniometric tracking of a missile in flight in the medium ( 8 to 12 micron) wavelength infrared (IR) spectrum. Since the natural IR signature of small missiles is usually inadequate, some augmentation is required. The existing concept for this IR augmenting beacon is a simple chemically heated metal can, one surface of which is made to approximate a black body radiator. The disadvantages of this technique are that much power is wasted at wide angles and that it is not possible to modulate the radiation to allow improved background discrimination. This invention is a beacon concept which solves both of these problems.
