Abstract : This patent application discloses a composition and method for killing tumor cells with phospholipids, or mixtures of appropriate lipids, as drugs. These drugs have been shown to have marked effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of tumor cells and are, therefore, useful as anti-tumor agents. Phospholipids having appropriate unsaturated fatty acids in the sn-2 position of the phosphatidylinositol or phosphatidylcholine were effective. Fatty acids having less than two double bonds (e.g., or oleic acid) were less effective, and saturated fatty acids (e.g., stearic acid) were ineffective. Plant PI that was previously used contained lineoleic acid (having 2 double bonds) in the sn-2 position. The present invention provides a broad and unexpected pattern of phospholipid cytotoxic activity that would embrace plant PI as well as other phospholipids with sn-2 unsaturated fatty acids.
