Abstract : An improved optical fiber structure is provided which is hardened against the effects of ionizing nuclear radiation and comprises a conventional plastic, glass or silica optical fiber core and cladding, having an additional outer coating comprising phosphorescent or luminescent material for interacting with the ionizing radiation to provide a source of light to optically bleach the fiber core of optical absorption sites produced as a result of the interaction of the ionizing radiation with the fiber core material.
