Abstract : The monomers of this invention can be reacted with amines to form aromatic polyamide resins which can be thermally treated to undergo intramolecular cyclization, without evolution of volatiles, into polyimidines. The first of the monomers of this invention is tolerane dicarbonyl halide. The second of the monomers of this invention is a bis(arylethynyl)terephthaloyl. The third of the monomers of this invention is a bis(arylethynyl)isophthaloly halide. The acid chloride monomers are prepared by treating the corresponding carboxylic acids with thionyl chloride or thionyl bromide. The above acid halide monomers can be condensed with a diamino compound to produce resins. More specifically, tolane dicarbonyl halide is condensed with a diamino compound of the general formula NH2-AR-NH2.
