Abstract : A safety and arming device using two counter-rotating gears provides stability from acceleration forces. The gears have a natural tendency to compensate for lateral shifts which tend to speed up or slow down any one single gear. The gears are anchored by a setback weight which when released is driven back by acceleration freeing the gears to rotate due to inertia effects. Upon completion of the rotation, the detonator switch is keyed to permit fuze detonation. The time required for the gears to rotate is controlled by an escapement device.
