Abstract : It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel method and apparatus for producing a laser. It is an additional object of the present invention to provide a method and apparatus for producing a VUV laser having a wavelength less than about 1000 Angstroms. It is a further object of the invention to provide a method and apparatus for producing an inexpensive source of coherent radiation in the 60 nm region. It is an additional object of the invention to provide a method and apparatus for producing a photopumped laser while employing the wavelength coincidence of two ions of molybdenum. These and additional objects are provided by the method and apparatus according to the present invention for producing a photopumped VUV laser in an Mo6 + ion-containing plasma.
