Abstract : An optical pressure sensing array is provided for sensing a high-frequency acoustic energy profile. The array is coupled to a reflector that is responsive to high-frequency acoustic pressure variations. The array transmits and receives light energy to and from the reflector. The received light energy is modulated by the movement of the reflector because of the acoustic field. Each element in the optical array is a closely packed geometrical configuration utilizing a single transmit optical fiber surrounded by six receive fibers, all having the same radius. In this configuration, the receive fibers receive light energy only from their associated transmit fiber resulting in a high-resolution acoustic profile. Furthermore, the geometric configuration permits a center-to-center element spacing that optimally is one-half the wavelength of the ultrasonic beam providing the acoustic energy at the operational frequency.
