Abstract : The invention is directed to a circumferential actuator for actively controlling and generating pressure waves in a piping system having a fluid or a fluid flow therein. The circumferential actuator includes a casing, a plurality of actuator units mounted in the casing for generating controlled pressure waves, a plurality of amplifiers for electronically conditioning the force generated by each of the plurality of actuator units, a controller for providing the input signals to the plurality of actuator units for controlling the phase and amplitude of the generated pressure wave, and a pressure compensating system for providing a balancing force to each actuator unit. The casing is adapted for interconnection in fluid communication with the piping system for passing the piping system flow therethrough. The plurality of actuator units are arranged axi-symmetrically around the casing. The plurality of actuators units are preferably arranged in at least 3 collocated pairs of actuators units mounted axi-symmetrically in the casing. The collocated pairs form two adjacent, axially aligned rings of actuator units. The pressure compensating system is interconnected with the plurality of actuator units and acts to provide a substantially equal pressure to each of the plurality of actuator units.
