Abstract : A phosphor is made of a low phonon energy host material and a small amount of either a rare earth or a compound of a rare earth. When the phosphor is activated by a light source which functions as an optical pump the phosphor emits light of highly enhanced brightness in the mid-IR range. Examples of host materials are heavy tri-halide crystals and chalcogenide glasses.
