Abstract : Reaction rate data for the catalyzed hydrogenation of ethylene, primarily in the presence of unsupported metallic catalysts, are critically reviewed. Reaction mechanisms are discussed in detail, and a statistical mechanical treatment of the reaction is given, according to the generalized theory of reaction starting from the well-known procedure of Glasstone, Laidler, and Eyring. Data for single-element catalysts and alloys are included and interpreted, as are data illustrating differences due to the physical form of the catalyst (film, foil, wire, powder, and some supported systems). Problems are discussed concerning reproducibility of experimental results over repeated runs, and as a function of catalyst pretreatment. The data is analyzed in 29 graphs and 29 tables, some of which are very extensive. The bibliography includes 141 references.
