Abstract : This paper is part of a program originating with the Office of Standard Reference Data of the National Bureau of Standards to obtain accurate thermodynamic properties for ammonia. Subsequent papers of this program will include real-gas corrections to the ideal-gas properties contained herein. In this paper the ideal-gas thermodynamic properties of ammonia in the ground electronic state are calculated at closely spaced temperature intervals from 50 to 5000 degrees K. The calculations include the contributions of ordinary vibrational anharmonicity and vibrational-rotational coupling together with rotational stretching and rotational quantum effects. Particular attention is given to the treatment of the rotational and vibrational anharmonic effects due to the molecular inversion.
