Abstract : Heavy water is of great interest in several branches of physics and technology. In particular, because of its unique nuclear properties, viz., its high moderating effect in conjunction with a very small neutron capture cross section, heavy water finds wide application as moderator in nuclear reactors. It is known, for example, that there are special advantages in using heavy water in homogeneous natural uranium reactors. It should be clear that in designing and constructing heavy water nuclear reactors (especially reactors in which heavy water under pressure is used both as moderator and as coolant). an accurate knowledge fo the thermophysical properties of heavy water is very important. The study of the properties of heavy water is also of great interest in the evaluation of the behavior of the different isotopic modifications of water. The book reviews, analyzes and correlates practically all the experimental and theoretical studies on the thermophysical properties of liquid and gaseous heavy water published in the Soviet Union and abroad.
