Abstract : Surface ionization is a branch of emission electronics in which the physical laws governing the thermal emission of ions from solids are studied. Chapter I gives a brief survey of elementary solid state theory and the theory of chemisorption, to facilitate an understanding of the subsequent treatment; further, a summary of the basic laws of thermionic emission from homogeneous and heterogeneous emitters is provided. In Chapter 2 thru 10 theories of surface ionization phenomena and experimental investigations are treated. Considerable space is allotted to the discussion of the emission properties of heterogeneous emitters with regard to ionization with the formation of positive and negative ions. Hitherto, little attention has been paid to these problems. In Chapters XI and XII problems of application are considered. The bibliography covers the relevant literature up to 1968. Works published at the end of 1967 are considered in less detail. More recent publications and also works not mentioned in the text are compiled in a supplementary list.
