Abstract : The following study was undertaken at the request of the National Bureau of Standards as a contribution to the National Standard Reference Data System. A basic distinction has been drawn throughout the present study between critically evaluated data (oscillation criteria, laser wavelength measurements, ion species, and transition identification) and useful data which has not been critically evaluated (output power, efficiency, gain, line breadth, transition probabilities, excitation mechanisms and descriptions of apparatus). Only data that has been critically evaluated is included in the tables; whereas useful, but non-critically evaluated dated, is confined to the descriptive summaries of the references to the laser literature. There are thus, two main parts to the present volume: the tables themselves (arranged alphabetically by element) and an annotated bibliography of laser references (arranged in the order they were encountered and with reference numbers appearing in the tables).
