Abstract : Recently, interest in the field of hydrometallurgy as applied to the production of copper has quickened because of serious economic and environmental issues that challenge the use of the traditional pyrometallurgical processes which have been dominant in the copper industry for many years. In return, the newer hydrometallurgical processes face an array of challenges which include limitations imposed by environmental restrictions, and the high cost and limited availability of fuels and electrical energy. Also, the newer pyrometallurgical processes that have appeared recently are more competitive and more acceptable from many points of view than are the old. The sound development of hydrometallurgical processes require a good understanding of the chemical reactions and, in particular, of the chemical properties of the participating ionic species in aqueous solutions. To meet this latter need, the International Copper Research Association has sponsored this monograph on The Thermodynamic Properties of Aqueous Inorganic Copper Systems.
