Abstract : In recent years, a great deal of attention has been directed to the behavior of slags during pyrometallurgical processing of copper. This interest arises principally from the problem of losses of copper resulting from dissolved copper and entrained particles of matte and metal in slags. Also, slags are important in smelting and refining operations for many other reasons. As a result, the International Copper Research Association, Inc. (INCRA) has sponsored this monograph on the thermodynamic properties of slags, which is the third in the series on the Metallurgy of Copper. Professor Carlos Diaz, the author, has assembled a great deal of information on the binary, ternary and quaternary liquid oxide systems that serve as the primary solutions for metallurgical slags. He also has various copper smelting systems, and has devoted considerable attention to factors that influence the loss of copper of slags. This monograph is timely, and research and development engineers working with both conventional and new processes for producing copper should find it a convenient and extensive compilation of data for their work. The reference lists also will prove useful to anyone wishing to obtain more detailed information on a study or property that is summarized in this monograph.
