Abstract : The Desk Book of Infrared Spectra is the outgrowth of a twenty-year old program to make reference spectra from private laboratories available for public use. Dozens of spectroscopists from industry, research institutions and government facilities have contributed spectra as well as time to assist in their evaluation and verification. The spectra herein are all grating and include a large collection of Research Quality Spectra evaluated and, in some cases, generated in programs carried out jointly by the Coblentz Society, the National Standard Reference Data System of the National Bureau of Standards and the Joint Committee on Atomic and Molecular Physical Data. The emphasis on quality for purposes of this book relates to experimental conditions which permit maximum use of group frequency characterization of compounds. There is a high percentage of solution spectra included in the book. Some compounds are represented by spectra obtained for more than the physical state. This multiplicity of data serves to expand the usefulness of the book both for reference and for teaching. Key guidelines to the interpretation of some major chemical classes have been included to demonstrate the kinds of data which can be deduced from infrared spectra. These interpretation discussions emphasize the significance of interpretation refinements available from high quality spectra.
