Abstract : Thermodynamic data find such wide use in industry, academic research, and governmental programs that efforts to catalog their application are frustrated by the immensity of the task. While this has been true for many decades, the current crises in energy, environment, materials supply, and other areas have greatly accentuated the need for reliable thermodynamic data. New materials and new processes in extended temperature and pressure ranges all contribute to the demand for more and better data. The organized compilation of thermodynamic data has a long and distinguished history. Many data centers and other groups throughout the world are actively compiling data from the primary literature, critically evaluating these data, and publishing tables of various types. However, such work is slow and painstaking, and most of the thermodynamic tables now available are far out of date. Since the results of new measurements are published in thousands of different journals and report series, there is a clear need to alert users of data to new results of interest to them--results which may not get into the standard tabulations for many years. The Bulletin of Chemical Thermodynamics fills this need for up-to-date information. Both of its major parts, the Reports of current research and the Substance-Property Indexes to recent literature, are valuable to the user. The thermodynamics laboratories contributing to the Reports are to be commended: they help others avoid unnecessary measurements by prompt announcement of recent work.
