A new procedure for scoring aptitude and achievement tests is described. The procedure involves the computation of scoring weights that are then associated with the response categories of test items. When tests are scored using these scoring weights, test reliability increases. The new procedure is called polyweighting. The scoring weights are called polyweights. Polyweights are computed using an iterative algorithm that is described in this report. In addition to describing the numerical procedure for computing polyweights, the report shows output from the computer program poly. The example demonstrates how polyweighting can be used to calibrate and score test items drawn from an item bank that is too large to allow each examinee to answer every question. It also demonstrates how polyweighting increases the internal consistency reliability of testing, item scoring, and polychotomous scoring.
