Abstract : For the optimally designed Euler column with clamped-ends and where stiffness is proportional to the square of cross-sectional area, the lowest eigenvalue is a double root. The first-published solution to this problem is incorrect. Olhoff and Rasmussen (1) uncovered the error, and in 1977 they provided a correct interpretation for the problem. The clamped-column case provides an example from among such design problems, where the prediction of optimal design requires consideration of nonunique or multimodal measures of response. Issues that may arise in the treatment of problems in this category have been addressed in several studies reported since 1977.
