Abstract : Manpower and resource constraints over the next decade will force a reexamination of Navy training methods. One change that can be predicted is a shift in emphasis from maintenance to operational training as advancing technology leads to more maintenance-free systems with greatly enhanced functional capabilities. To assist in training approach trade-offs, a better definition of the overall training system is required as well as a statement of training system operational requirements by warfare area. To illustrate, an operational requirement is suggested for undersea warfare and the conclusion is drawn that increased emphasis should be placed on organic, onboard approaches to training as substitutes for current shoreside training methods.
