Abstract : The study of elementary chemical reactions at elevated temperatures is greatly improved when the shock heating of a reactive gas is combined with a very sensitive technique of species detection. Atomic resonance absorption spectrometry, ARAS, is such a technique. For example, it allows the detection of relatively low concentrations of H and O atoms behind reflected or incident shocks.
