Abstract : A study of the propagation of shock waves through random media, which was described in the 12th International Shock Tube Symposium, has been continued. A diagnostic technique is described in which shadowgraph motion pictures of the plane shock wave can be used to study the changed that occur in the distribution of spatial scales in the medium. The growth of large fluctuations in the amplitude of acoustic shocks has been studied theoretically with a new stochastic formulation of geometrical acoustics. Numerical calculations have been amde of ray trajectories in a computer-generated two-dimensional random medium in order to check the predictions of the analytical theory and to calculate special parameters for comparison to experiment.
