Abstract : An ultra-clean 2 in I.D. single pulse shock tube coupled to an atomic resonance absorption detection system was constructed in order to determine H atom concentration by Lyman-alpha absorption. The shock tube with its LiF windows was baked to 300 C and pumped down to approx. 10 to the minus 7th power torr under this baking temperature. Ultra-pure argon could be shock heated to approx. 2500 K with no spurious H atom absorption. The system was constructed in order to study the kinetics of chemical reactions, where are strongly catalyzed by H atoms, under the conditions where no such atoms are detected.
