Abstract : The thermal decomposition of hydrogen azide dilute in argon has been studied in the pressure region from 55 to 200 Torr, between 850 and 2000 K. The evolution of species such as HN3 NH(1 delta), NH(3 sigma-), NH2 and N3 was monitored behind incident shock waves using emission techniques. At temperature T2 lower than 1250 K, the fast consumption of HN3 was preceded by an induction period which became negligible at higher temperatures. For T2 > 1250 K, the apparent rate constant of the decomposition process, determined from HN3 half-life, was found to be of first order in both HN3 and Ar.
