Abstract : A single-pulse-shock tube, with a newly developed instrumentation such that high pressure pulses of reproducible and preselectable length could be produced, is used to investigate the influence of pressure, temperature, particle size, and variable test time on the gaseous volatile matter at heating rates up to 10 to the 6th power K/s. After quenching of the sample by the expansion wave the final composition of the gaseous produces in analysed using gas chromatography and mass-spectrometry. The quenched lignite particles are collected and analysed chemically and by scanning electron microscopy to detect compositional and physical changes. The concentrations of the following poduces CH4, C2H6, C3H8, C6H14, C2H4, C3H6, C4H8, C2H2, CO, CO2, H2, O2, N2 have been measured. These data confirm that the dependencies observed in the past, when going from low to medium heating rates, are continued to high heating rates.
