Abstract : An overview of the estuarine studies by the U.S. Geological Survey is presented in the paper by R. T. Cheng, which is located elsewhere in this volume. The specific problem to be addressed here is the application of finite element solution methods to estuarine flows which are governed by the shallow water equations. The ability of the method to easily handle a variety of boundary conditions as well as problems associated with the choice of elements are discussed. Finally, an application to the tidal and residual circulation in San Francisco Bay is presented.
