Abstract : Ammunition Shearing originated in 1969 to aid in the demil of M125 bomblets. The success of that operation laid the ground work for more testing and the development of new equipment. Shearing munitions has been proven effective in reducing or eliminating high order detonations while demilling sheared or punched ammunition items in a deactivation furnace. Shearing has also been used to reduce the size of M55 and M61 chemical rockets by sectioning into seven sections. The sections can then be demilled in a deactivation furnace. Ammunition shearing is a fast and efficient method of expanding the capabilities of the APE 1236 Deactivation Furnace.
