Abstract : A small scale smoke test method is described. The test involves the pyrolysis or combustion of a small sample of material (approximately 200 mg) in a flow of pre-heated dry air. The optical density of the resulting stream of smoke is continuously monitored. The temperature of the pyrolysis oven can be varied in the range 200 degrees C to 900 degrees C which corresponds to a range of radiant heat flux of 2/0.3 WCM to 2/8.5 WCM. A microcomputer is used to process the data generated, to produce smoke versus time plots, smoke versus temperature plots, and '3D' plots of smoke evolution versus time versus temperature to illustrate the overall smoke producing characteristics of materials.
