Abstract : Based upon the one-year operation of the RBC facility on the wastewaters from this manufacturing facility, the following preliminary conclusions are drawn: (1) The biomass on RBC units can stand extreme stresses from pH, temperature, and shock organic loads without the system failing to a degree that it does not recover when the stress is removed. (2) A sudden increase in organic loading will not immediately increase the organic removal rate. However, the biomass growth will increase rapidly to increase the removal rate. The biomass growth rate will be directly related to the wastewater temperature because of the slower growth at lower temperatures. (3) Low wastewater temperature does not significantly decrease the organic removal efficiency at normal operating levels. However, at higher organic loadings, the RBC may not have the additional biomass growth.
