Abstract : The design and sizing of biofilters for application to aquaculture is more of an art than a science. If facilities are to be developed for intensification of fish culture, a great deal of research needs to be done. Design criteria are available for facilities that rear cold-water fish and invertebrates but is limited to water temperatures up to 15 C. Since operating temperatures are high (27to 30 C), organic loadings are small, and flowrates are high, standard design tables are not adequate. To complicate matters more, the actual waste production rates for the live aquaculture systems are variable and ill-defined. Optimization of design will require the continued evaluation of equipment and processes under a variety of conditions.
