Abstract : A centralized treatment system is proposed for the MIC tanneries. The treatment train encompasses precoagulations, biofiltration and post-filtration. Among the treatment alternatives, biofiltration is the most adequate due to lower operating costs, suitability for intermittent flow, versatility and relative ease of operation. The proposed treatment train complies with the limitations for emission into the sea (except for NH3). Reduction of the toxicity of the treated effluent can be achieved by ammonia stripping or by dilution when mixed with seawater. Segregation on non-polluted effluents, originated in clean water pools, from polluted wastes is expected to reduce treatment costs. Government subsidization of the centralized treatment facility is necessary to encourage MIC tanneries to institute the proposed treatment system.
