Abstract : The aquatic-ribbon fixed-film biological treatment process discussed in this paper is a newly developed treatment technology, which is capable of achieving removal of soluble BOD, nitrification, and denitrification form domestic or municipal wastewaters at a level similar to conventional rotating biological contactors (RBCs). Under the experimental conditions in this study, the pilot aquatic ribbon treatment system was capable of removing more than 91% of the total 5-day BOD at a hydraulic detention of 16 hours; providing 94% nitrification at a hydraulic detention time of 8 hours; and achieving 87% denitrification at a hydraulic detention time of 2 hours. The combination of the liquid-solids separation process with the aquatic ribbon reactor into one physical unit is a unique feature of the aquatic ribbon fixed-film biological treatment system. This feature effectively eliminates the need for a separate clarifier and thus should result in a cost-savings for aquatic-ribbon systems compared to conventional RBC systems.
