Abstract : This review concentrates on self-reported reasons for enlisting in the military. These resemble attitudinal data and must be regarded as only one kind of variable contributing to enlistment. Others include aggregate variables such as unemployment rates and military pay, and individual variables such as parental occupation and respondent education, among others. A variety of multivariate analyses are currently being conducted in an effort to sort out the relative contributions of each, as well as the interactions among them. (Author)
