Abstract : In this paper, we present the preliminary results of the normalization of the cross-stream density data compiled from three transects (Sections I, II, and III) of the Gulf Stream '60 data (Fuglister, 1963). All three sections are approximately perpendicular to the Stream direction. The procedure for the analysis is as follows: from the computed density field, we calculate first the sea-surface height anomaly across the front using 1500 m as the reference level. From the sea-surface height profile, we then estimate the value of the maximum slope of the profile and the maximum height change across the anomaly. From these, the length scale is readily obtained.
